LEILA - SMASH HIT

WE REVIEW THE NEW SINGLE FROM LELIA – SMASH HIT

Some of the biggest artists in the world go by one name. Madonna, Shakira, Cher. But have you heard of Lelia? The answer is probably not. Yet. Lelia’s debut single, ‘Smash Hit’ is out now, so don’t be surprised if you hear this name much more now.

The vocals in this track are abrupt and cry for attention, making it the most noticeable part of the song. They are punchy, full of attitude and almost punk-like as everything sounds slightly shouted. There is nothing subtle about the heavily English accented, little bit Charlie XCX styling.

The singer also has quite a unique way of saying certain words so you pay attention to the lyrics as they really stand out. Everything feels like it shouldn’t quite work, but it does somehow.

The aforementioned vocals come in almost instantly, trying to gain your attention immediately, but not before a short synthy opening. This sets the tone, showing you the bouncy pop tune before it’s properly begun. You can tell from that beat that you will be dancing away to this one.

This feels especially true in the small instrumental part where you feel impelled to clap along. You literally can not sit still during this track because something will make you want to move. Whether it’s the catchy musicality, the emphasis on certain words at the end of lines that makes you want to learn the lyrics faster, or the general vibes.

And then it ends as abruptly as it began, keeping up the fast paced, punchy feel.

There is something humorous and quite clever about singing a song called ‘smash hit’, almost like a manifestation. To be honest though, I totally see it. Maybe that’s what everyone should be doing now.
