LEYLA ROMANOVA

WE REVIEW THE NEW SINGLE FROM LEYLA ROMANOVA – MY SUN

Built around the idea of love overcoming distance and circumstance, “My Sun” arrives carrying a lot of emotional baggage before a note has even been played. Inspired by childhood memories of watching Stepmom and hearing Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell’s immortal “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough”, Romanova is aiming for something timeless rather than trendy. Thankfully, she mostly succeeds.

In My Sun the duet format was clearly the right decision from the outset. Grammy-nominated vocalist Mishell Ivon brings warmth, elegance and enough soul to elevate the material beyond standard adult contemporary fare, while Jerome Brooks Jr. provides a grounded, classic vocal counterpoint that recalls the golden age of American soul without sounding like a tribute act. Together, their voices intertwine naturally, creating the sense of connection that sits at the centre of the song’s message.

Romanova’s background as a composer is also evident throughout. Unlike many modern pop releases that rely heavily on repetitive hooks and production tricks, “My Sun” feels carefully constructed. The arrangement breathes. There is space between the notes. The melody unfolds patiently rather than demanding instant gratification. You can hear the influence of someone who thinks cinematically and understands how emotion builds through dynamics rather than volume.

While the performances are strong and the production polished, there are moments where the track settles comfortably into familiar territory. Listeners hoping for a surprise twist, a bold production decision or a truly unforgettable melodic peak may find themselves wishing Romanova had taken a few more risks.

Still, these are relatively minor criticisms of a song that understands exactly what it wants to be. “My Sun” isn’t chasing viral trends or trying to reinvent pop music. Instead, it focuses on delivering a timeless message through accomplished songwriting and genuinely moving performances. In that respect, it succeeds admirably.

What remains long after the final note isn’t necessarily the hook or the production, but the feeling behind it. Romanova has created a song rooted in memory, love and human connection, and that authenticity shines through every second. Sometimes that’s enough to make a song glow brighter than any chart-friendly gimmick ever could.
