No pressure then, it’s only THE frontman of his generation, Liam Gallagher joining forces with arguably one of history’s greatest guitarists, John Squire. What could possibly go wrong? Thankfully not much, (apart from the middle bit)
For those of you who may have spent the last thirty-five years living under a rock, ‘Just Another Rainbow’ is the debut collaborative track from former Oasis frontman Liam Gallagher and legendary Stone Roses guitarist John Squire. Without a doubt, two of the most influential bands of all time and it’s fair to say this collaboration has been both expected and teased for what seems like forever.
After initially knocking some demos together at John’s Macclesfield studio the pair finished the tracks in LA with producer Greg Kurstin taking up bass duty and Joey Waronker on drums. ‘Just Another Rainbow’; is the first of the resultant tracks to be aired and could pretty much have been an AI-generated Gallagher/Squire collaboration.
It is exactly what you would expect. Haunting anthemic vocals from Liam, John’s beautiful psychedelic guitars hitting you from all directions. It’s all perfectly delivered if you ignore the middle ‘rainbow rundown’ bit but that said, it takes a brave producer to say no to Liam Gallagher and John Squire. It is however, a brief moment of embarrassment in what is otherwise a great track. Whilst easy, lazy comparisons would point to the Beatles/Cream, the overarching thought I had when hearing the track for the first time was how much it reminded me of the legendary Shack single ‘I Know You Well’, especially once that stunning bass riff kicks in.
True to form Liam has played down the collaboration as ‘The greatest album since Revolver’ and whilst we may or may not get a full album and live dates, there’s no doubt this track alone will make the encores at Liam’s summer shows this year quite something to behold.
