Vibrantly charismatic trio LILAC have recently captured fans across the country with their self-proclaimed “floral indie disco.” Now, on the brink of an exciting new season, they’ve graced us with one last Summer hit, Touch.
The first minute or so of this song puts on a façade of simple electronica. Deep kick patterns underlie a guitar line caked in ethereal delay and techno subtleties. Meanwhile, the singer’s vocals soar over the rhythm section in a dynamic and dreamy wave of cutting lyrics in memorable hooks. A delicate chorus glides through, before building back up with ticking electronic beats.
However, the second chorus is where Touch really takes off as LILAC prove they are no one trick pony when it comes to genre. Earth-shattering acoustic drums crash in simultaneously with overdriven guitar and relentlessly powerful vocals.
The tune enters a whole new realm of intensity, yet it’s crafted in so well that you feel as if you knew how it was going to develop before even hearing it.
It’s curious, but LILAC make this fierce fusion of indie rock and electronica work. When a band pushes the boundaries like this, they are honing a craft of uncharted territory and that makes them all the more exciting to watch.
