Sheffield-based singer Lol Bailey is only 21, but his new single “I Can’t Sleep” already sounds like the work of someone who’s lived a few more late nights than most.
Bailey himself calls it “one big insomnia song”, imagining a life where things slowly fall apart just because you couldn’t get out of bed in the morning. Dramatic? Maybe. Honest? Definitely. And that is exactly what makes the track hit.
It opens with just an acoustic guitar, no fuss, no distractions. Just space for his voice and honestly, what a voice. There’s a real maturity there that I wasn’t expecting. Warm, controlled, emotional, and completely believable.
Those soft “ouh” harmonies in the background are a beautiful touch too. They float in at just the right moments and gave me actual goosebumps. Simple ideas done really well.

The repetition in the lyrics works perfectly. When he sings “I’m burning, I’m burning, I’m burning”, you really feel that restless, stuck-inside-your-own-head kind of anxiety. It captures that 3 a.m. overthinking feeling so well.
The ending is my favourite part though. The line “You know… you know me so well” keeps repeating like a little mantra, with the harmonies echoing it, until everything strips back to just the acoustic guitar again.
There’s something refreshingly genuine about Lol Bailey. He’s not trying to sound bigger than he is. Just a young artist studying songwriting in Sheffield, working a regular job to fund his music and figuring things out one song at a time.
