Hackney’s own Lola Wild has released her latest offering “Girls in Hollywood” – which is described by Lola as a “haunting cinematic indie-pop” track, and looking at the artwork and campaign around it, before listening, it sounds like it will be nothing short of fabulous.
Picture this, the Marilyn Monroe type glamour, hair perfectly poised with a retro curl or two, very much pin-up meets glamour, it’s hard not to be enticed by Lola just by the artwork, it’s brilliantly done.
It starts off with almost like a twinkle, but it plays with speed and I was intrigued as to where it would go, then it goes into this sombre, slowed-down, almost moody feel – the teasing the listener a bit, you almost gloss over the lyrics, but this isn’t a bad thing – the track in general just eases you in, it does settle into a multi-genre masterpiece.
Generally I’m not a massive fan of long instrumentals, but there is a solid 30 seconds in the middle and it’s such a soothing yet upbeat track that I didn’t mind, it was at the right point and it made me settle into the song.
Towards the end, it slows right down again and has this gorgeous string-section behind her and it just gives the space for Lola to really project and have the focus on her vocals, they are stunning and there is no doubting that.
There is no point where the backing track or Lola is overpowering one another; it’s beautifully mastered. And Lola Wild is going for that nostalgic feel, then she’s really doing it some justice. There are quite a few categories I feel like “Girls in Hollywood” could fall into, and I’m getting a bit of pop, soul, folk, and an injection of indie in there. It’s meeting a lot of different taste corners of my musical palette.
This is a gorgeous track, it’s both mysterious and mesmerising, and I feel like it would suit many people’s music tastes, the whole project is a masterclass from track to artwork and overall theme, really well produced – I’ll be looking more into Lola’s catalogue from this!
