LUCIAN LACEWING

WE REVIEW THE NEW SINGLE FROM LUCIAN LACEWING – LAND OF ENCHANTMENT

Lucian Lacewing arrives with Land Of Enchantment and he throws open the curtains and lets the strange stuff in.

This is a slow-burner built from atmosphere rather than hooks. Sitting somewhere between psychedelic drift, ambient meditation and late-night headphone weirdness, the track leans into drones inspired by Indian classical music, layers of muted trumpet, synth hum and scattered vocal fragments. Those voices – supplied by a collective of friends including Qualia Cascade, Annette Buckley, Tanya Goknel and others – don’t function as lead vocals in the traditional sense. They appear like ghosts in the room, half-heard memories floating through the mix.

Plenty of new artists chuck everything at the wall because they don’t yet know who they are. Lacewing sounds like someone who already does. The production is careful, textured and patient. You can hear someone obsessing over tiny sonic details, making sure each sound has a purpose. That dreamlike quality mentioned in the press blurb isn’t nonsense either – there are moments where the track genuinely feels like it’s hovering rather than playing.

Bristol has always had a knack for nurturing left-field talent, and this feels cut from that cloth. There’s a little trip-hop spirit in the atmosphere, a little art-school experimentation in the arrangement, but it still manages to feel personal rather than derivative.

That said, Land Of Enchantment won’t be for everyone, and that’s fine. The lack of a central melodic anchor means some listeners may drift off before the track fully reveals itself. For all its rich textures, it occasionally risks becoming too polite.

There’s also a question of identity going forward. A debut like this establishes taste and ambition, but the next move matters. Can Lucian Lacewing turn this sonic world into something unmistakably his over multiple releases? That’s the challenge. Plenty can make a vibe. Fewer can build a universe.
