Eighteen months from the release of her debut EP, Lucy Crisp marks her return to the studio with the release of the perfectly-titled ‘Maze’. Having spent 2024 selling out venues and performing for the Cystic Fibrosis 60th Anniversary Livestream, 2025 is shaping up to be huge for her career, and ‘Maze’ is nothing short of a welcome addition to her discography.
An ethereal mix between commercial and hyperpop, ‘Maze’ introduces the ever-powerful vocals of Lucy Crisp and places them eloquently over a Lorde-esque instrumental. The lyrics of the first verse justify the song’s title before exploding into the chorus, which in my opinion falls flat in comparison to the verse. Nonetheless, Lucy’s vocal talent shines throughout and justifies the successes she’s seen as of late.
With clear inspiration from various branches of pop, ‘Maze’ shows subtle similarities to The 1975’s ‘The Sound’. By mirroring the vocal melody through portions of the song but maintaining personal identity, the influences are acknowledged but not appropriated.
Though not without slight criticism, a tweak to the arrangement of the song and further emphasis on the chorus would have elevated this track to another level.
A strong return to the studio following some time away, ‘Maze’ is just a glimpse into the capabilities of Lucy Crisp. At such an early stage of her career, the future holds endless possibility. There’s room to improve, but there’s less room to fail.
