WE REVIEW THE NEW SINGLE FROM MANUKAI – INTESTINES

The latest single from Manukai gives us an intimate insight into his personal struggles with his digestive system, his complex relationship with food, and the inherent taboos.

The pair of electronic elements with strings have a hypnotic effect and make for a captivating single. We feel Manukai drowning in ravenous desperation and the monstrous identity that looms guiltily over disordered eating.

The intertwined alternative styles, majorly bedroom-pop, and dark pop give a freedom of traditional musical constraints.

He creates a dream-like sequence, punctuated by chilling screams, we can see Manukai’s influence from artists such as Nina Simone, Lauryn Hill, and Jazmin Bean. The overall theatrical effect is eerie but beautiful.

Hailing from Manchester but shaped by the South West, Manukai, who spent his formative years bilaterally deaf, underwent surgery that gifted him the sense of hearing in his youth. Manukai proudly champions the intersectionality of queerness, disability, Black-Asian identity, and the art of being a professional menace.

After facing stereotypes, unwanted attention, and variable reception, he committed to his dream of creating music. From a young age, Manukai nurtured his passions with rhythm and the transportation through music to imaginary worlds. This is only his second single, he’s paving his way into the alt-pop genre.
