Sheffield boys, Matilda Shakes, are back with a new single. Heebie Jeebies, is their latest upbeat banger that is true to form for the lads in that it is a class composition full to the brim with indie nuance. It’s instantly memorable and it’s another track the band can be proud of.
The track opens with an understated guitar solo that allows space for the drums to shine and build up. The guitar sounds punchy and really stands out, meaning you are instantly captivated as a listener and it introduces the song in a brilliant way. The vocals join in fairly quickly, mentioning the title off the bat, which is also the only time you hear it. The singing is so clean and well mixed and it compliments the instrumentals perfectly. It’s a smooth sounding song that feels easy to listen to and puts you in a good mood.
The chorus is a catchy number that involuntarily makes you tap your feet to the lively rhythm. The lyrics are easy enough to remember, meaning that you may find yourself singing it almost instantly. The track follows a pretty simple formula of verse, chorus, verse, chorus, but the second verse, as it leads into the chorus again, builds up, repeating the line ‘here and the now’ and creating a bit of subtle tension that makes the chorus sound bigger and more grand.
The guitar solo that acts as a bridge is the true highlight of the song. With some singing faint in the background, the guitar is the main focus, and there is emphasis on how epic it sounds. It’s short and snappy and a fun way to lead the song out.
The track ends the same way it began, coming full circle with that same guitar riff. It feels complete and gives the song a satisfying conclusion, although not if you’re disappointed that it’s over.
This is Matilda Shakes first single release of 2025, but will hopefully be the beginning of another prolific year for them. Their sound is one that never gets dull, and Heebie Jeebies is a great addition to their back catalogue that fans will be excited to hear at upcoming gigs.
