Sheffield’s own Matilda Shakes are back with their newest single “Frankie”.
After a big year for the band, playing on T’other stage at Tramlines, and headlining Leadmill, amongst other things, a new single is what was missing, and it’s here…
The first thing that sparks this track is this incredible guitar work, a creepy sound almost, which is appropriate given that it’s released on Halloween…The guitar pangs you hear at the beginning are consistent throughout the track too, just dipping in and making little reappearances then and again.
Something that struck me about “Frankie” is that it isn’t as heavy as some of the bands previous tracks, and honestly, this style REALLY suits them, the vocals go from soft to emotional to that perfect indie-esque sound you would hear across the Sheffield music scene, but done well.
The vocals are well crafted, showing the softer side, but also seeing the ability to go a little bit fast at points, but also slowing it right down too, showing a wide range and talent, this, in my opinion is a difficult song to keep up with, so it’s credit to frontman James Hallam.
Not to forget the others too, the guitar and bass have moulded together seamlessly and carry the backing track into lots of different tones, the drums also just blend into this beautifully.
This is probably my favourite track after “Fever Dream” that Matilda Shakes have released, they’ve really experimented with their sound, and in the way that it should be experimented, dipping their toe into some heavier and softer stuff, but also finding something that works well with their skills and style.
The artwork is lovely, not what I’d expect but it works all the same, a sunset with a silhouette does however, show that softer side that I think has come out in this single.
Overall, it’s their best yet, the backing track is fantastic, the vocals are on point and generally it could be the beginning of a new Matilda Shakes, as they settle into their style.
A fantastic track.
