‘Rock and a Hard Place’ is the newest single from Matt DeAngelis. Released on January 24th, the track follows the soft rock approach of the soloist’s previous single, ‘Rejection’, and is a neat addition to his burgeoning discography. Since arriving on the scene in 2019, the New Jersey native has amassed 12 singles and an EP.
The tune opens with sparkly piano work before a barrage of sweepingly seductive guitars kicks in. DeAngelis’s distinct, soulful vocals soon glide over the almost dreamy soundscape before bursting into unadulterated passion at the track’s bridge. Grandiose vocals are a mainstay throughout ‘Rock and a Hard Place’ and add a real throwback quality, reminiscent of power-pop ballads of the 70s and 80s.
Building on weighty themes explored in past work such as mental health and climate change, ‘Rock and a Hard Place’ addresses life’s complexities and the tough choices we find ourselves having to make. Offering a ’trust in the process’ mindset, “It’s easy to think life’s planned, but it’s not,” the track carries an uplifting message and chooses hope over a cynical outlook.
Despite its introspective nature, ‘Rock and a Hard Place’ has a catchy, hit-making essence from a seasoned and talented singer-songwriter. However, the track falls short in some regards. At four minutes long, repetition fatigue sets in by its conclusion, and the song is unfortunately engulfed by its melodramatic opulence, veering toward self-indulgence at points.
Ultimately, DeAngelis has delivered a tightly crafted soft rock track that, despite some perceived flaws, will more than appease his dedicated and ever-growing fan base.
