Matt Woodman’s latest single, titled As Good As Me, is available to listen to now and be prepared for another stunning composition from the Manchester based artist. With his debut album released in 2023, it feels like maybe another one will be on the cards soon. If this song was to appear on it, already you would know you are in for a treat.
As Good As Me starts off with that classic acoustic feel and what sounds like a slide guitar introducing the track. It has quite a countrified tone, the twang of the guitar really highlighting this genre. It sounds wonderfully produced, crispy so you can hear every rasp and infliction in Matt’s voice when he sings. The clarity of every aspect in the song is somewhat chilling.
The composition is a relaxed, easy listening vibe that would appeal to anyone. The emotion within it adds a heartfelt layer that really gives it a distinguishable edge. It’s honestly a beautiful song.
There aren’t any choruses, instead just long verses that each end with the same line: the title of the song. This is quite a unique take on structure, although maybe not within the country style, but definitely within mainstream music. These verses get broken up occasionally by instrumentals or a different form of verse which gives the track variation and ensures that the song doesn’t remain exactly the same throughout.
A violin solo takes centre stage as the end approaches, really leaning into that country-equse sound once more. It’s a stand out part within the track that makes it extra memorable, because how can you not love a violin solo?
If you don’t get lost in the dreamy vocals and the soft instrumentation of As Good As Me, go back and listen to it again. Matt Woodman’s single is a showcase of talent that we should all be sitting up and paying attention to. Another gorgeous song to add to his growing collection of masterpieces. Matt Woodman, you’re absolutely smashing it.
