The intro to Mercy Kelly’s new track “Breathe For Her” hooked me right away. There’s this clean, catchy start that had me moving my head before I even realised it. When the chorus kicks in, that’s where it really gets me. The indie-pop vibe just works. The melody, the pace, the way Jack Marland’s voice lifts, it all comes together perfectly. The chorus is easily my favorite part of the song (and lucky for me, it comes back more than once).
Marland’s voice feels honest, like he’s trying to say something that actually matters but ends up turning it into a melody you’ll hum later. There’s this moment near the end where he sings “I swear” twice, holding the note and I swear (pun fully intended), it gave me chills. It’s small but it’s the kind of detail that makes a song stick and stand out from other tracks.

You can tell there’s a lot of care in the production too. The guitars shimmer but don’t take over, the drums keep everything tight and there’s enough space in the mix for it to really breathe (pun intended again). I love how the sound builds toward the end, it gets louder and louder until it just stops. That sudden cut-off feels like a release, like exhaling after holding your breath for three minutes.
What I really like about Mercy Kelly is how they sound big without trying too hard. You can tell they love what they do. There’s this mix of heart and chemistry that’s rare. You can hear bits of The Cure or The Killers in their sound, maybe even U2 in the guitars, but it still feels completely like them.
“Breathe For Her” sounds like a late-night drive song: windows down, streetlights flashing by, that mix of nostalgia and energy in your chest. Sure, it’s about love and loss, but it’s also about feeling everything all at once and letting the song carry you through it.
That’s what Mercy Kelly do best. They turn real emotion into something catchy. “Breathe For Her” isn’t trying to be perfect, it is honest, urgent and full of heart. And that’s exactly what makes it so good.
