“Speak Too Soon” is the newest offering from Indie 5-piece Mercy Kelly, from Manchester, following the release of “Illusions” earlier this year.
I generally wasn’t sure what to expect, but honestly? I was blown away.
I was instantly hooked with a brilliantly crafted guitar intro, the vocals coming in softly, but owning centre-stage, which is how it should be!
The hook is literally instant, whilst I’d put it more soft indie to begin with, but the instrumental slowly elevates, in a way you don’t really notice until it’s too late, and it builds up to this euphoric sound, and a powerful backing to keep you interested, because of this, I didn’t really pay too much attention to the lyrics, that’s not necessarily a bad thing, I was just so bloody enchanted!
it does settle into a consistent style, and just when you think this is it, it completely switches up and the vocals really do take the spotlight, with a real silence behind them, which elevates them even more, before swooping back in and coming in with that catchy guitar twang.
Having listened a few times and soaked in the lyrics, they simply speak of, in my opinion, the trials and tribulations of life, love and everything in between, losing something, someone or their way a little bit, which I feel most people will be able to relate to at somepoint in their lives.
This is the perfect track to lay back, listen, take it all in, it’s incredibly easy to listen to, it’s quite chilling in the sense of it just brought me a real sense of warmth, understanding and more – it’s weird, but a good weird.
Initially when I saw how long it was, I did think hmm… but honestly, with the little twists and nuggets of change they put in, it works, it has some gorgeous softer guitar input throughout, but particularly at the end.
The vocals are the main character, and they pierce right through everything, despite having maybe a softer tone, it’s a real talent and one I really enjoyed listening to.
Overall it’s a beautifully crafted track, incredible vocals, amazing backing track and enough to keep you satisifed, or wanting more… or both? Either way, it’s brilliant.
