It’s 2025 and we already have one of the most beautifully written songs in the form of Niamh Casey and her new single, US AGAINST THE WORLD. The pop/folk piece is written from the heart and is a touching piece Niamh wrote for her father.
The Stockton-on-Tees singer/songwriter layers a multitude of instruments brushed with emotive and sweet harmonies. From bluegrass instruments, delicate percussion and ringing acoustics, the instrumentation is all the makings of a classic folk piece. Add to that Casey’s elegant vocals, the rhythmic pop elements bleed through like a Hozier track.
The rhythms give the impression of a steady movement as if Niamh Casey is on a journey with the memories flooding by the landscape out of the window. The theme of her father over the warm and cosy sounds and mature well-crafted lyrics are engaging and so touching it could easily bring happy tears to one’s eyes.
The bridge in the track is a burst of group vocals repeating previous lyrics that is a beautifully uplifting moment in the track. It’s like standing on the shoulders of giants but with the knowledge that there is help and guidance along the way. It has been a while since Niamh Casey released some recorded music onto listening platforms but it has certainly been worth the wait.
The production is well-balanced, giving each new instrument its space to breath. Niamh’s vocals are centred beautifully with the guitars clean and providing the perfect backdrop. The chorus line is comforting about the watchful nature of her father and we progress into the verses building the character of her father. He sounds like a great guy with encouragement that fills the song with its sincerity. The harmonised vocals are very First Aid Kit and Haim and Niamh Casey is a great addition to the world of folk/pop.
Besides the bridge vocal break, US AGAINST THE WORLD is a track you can sit back and take in. It feels like a warm blanket and is truly one of the best written folk tracks this reviewer has heard in years.
