A Multi-instrumentalist, mod fashionista, and a discography expanding for over a decade? It can only be Nick Shane who returns with his new single, Feverland. The Dundee singer-songwriter is currently working on his new album and a taste of that upcoming record is the smooth sounds of Feverland.
The aforementioned decade-long discography is quite poignant here as Feverland was recorded around ten years ago. Nick previously recorded the track with his old band The NSA. However, like many musical gems, it has found new life with re-recordings and mixings on his upcoming 2024 album.
Feverland is a steady and dreamy tempo with luscious keys layering over guitar chords and harmonised vocals. Nick mixes a variety of sonic influences from indie, mod, soul and bluesy Americana. The intro serves as a grooving bass over chapel organ tones. The guitar is pushed back as it delivers Americana licks but lets the deep vocals of Nick resonate. The chorus is warm and filling like an eccentric 90’s Blur track.
The rhythms are kept straightforward throughout Feverland, but the glowing appeal of the track is its enticing positivity. The track provides plenty of variety at the same time with fat guitar notes and those organ notes give this track a special level of soul music. Without the keys, so much would be lost from Feverland from the emotion to the rhythms and overall feel to the track.
From the moment you press play, those chewy Americana guitars are a delight and the bass is wet and funky. The vocal patterns groove on top of the bass guitars as if they were dancing with each note. The uplifting chorus is full of energy with the bass guitar continuing to be so prominent. It’s an explosion of sound and Nick’s vocals never stray too far, but add extra emphasis in the chorus.
The bridge and outro allow for greater guitar focus and whilst the listener knows the guitar is there, it’s nice that it takes a step back for the majority. When the ears are treated to the many riffs on offer they are a tasteful break away from the lyrics. However, it is so intriguing to be taken in by the overall rhythmic stylings of Feverland.
If Feverland was a place and this was its soundtrack I would be buying a ticket in no time.
