‘It’s Not Fair!’ is the new track from Edinburgh band Oh Romance. Since bursting onto the scene in 2022 the trio have played sold-out shows across the UK, appeared at Y Not? festival and were nominated for Live Act of the Year Award at this year’s Scottish Live Music Awards.
A change of pace to the pop-punk fusions that appear on 2023 EP, Kiss & Tell, ‘It’s Not Fair!’ is a spitefully snappy track built around feverish guitar work and lyrics that are spat rather than sung by lead singer Alex Campbell. Clocking in at under two minutes, the rapid-fire single encompasses a frantic punk energy that takes more inspiration from Soft Play than My Chemical Romance.
The lyrics detail the breakdown of a relationship due to the protagonist’s withdrawn behaviour, ‘it’s all fun and games when you live in your own head,’ suicidal tendencies, ‘it’s all fun and games when your brains on the ceiling’ and their perceived injustice of the situation. In spite of its stark content, ‘It’s Not Fair’s hypnotically repetitive chorus gives it a catchy edge and is destined to be a fan favourite.
The track is perhaps Oh Romance’s most compelling yet and a welcome musical shift to previous works that is sure to appease their dedicated fandom whilst simultaneously attracting hoards of new admirers.
