A 15-year-old artist from Manchester, gone from doing covers at local pubs and bars to getting his own music featured at local radio stations — that is Oliver White, an emerging star who just marked his bold entry into the indie rock scene with his debut single Blink of an Eye.
Bare vocals, gritty guitars and blunt chords, the loose ends within verses. There is something so satisfying about hearing such organic production in music nowadays, where the raw mixing and delivery so explicitly capture the sense of authenticity that is inherent in rock.
Olly’s voice, though tainted with a hint of youth, surprisingly holds up the weight of instrumentals well. In fact, the juxtaposition itself is almost refreshing to the ear, especially in the chorus where he articulates “My soul got stolen in a blink of an eye” that makes it so believable and heart-wrenching, you wouldn’t have known this was sung by a 15-year-old for its emotional depth and assured lyricism.
The track is filled with stumbling guitars, throwing the listeners around in its rich soundscape, while Olly rides on top of the layered drums with his tender vocals, yet just as impactful to the listener. You can feel the young star’s charm listening to his voice alone, his enunciation of words and his genuine delivery of lyrics.
The tonal shift after the second chorus drags the listener into a downward spiral, just to be picked up again by the electrifying bridge filled with wailing guitars and offsetting drums, followed by a final chorus and an isolated outro with ease, leaving the listener wanting for more.
Blink of an Eye is more than Olly’s entry into the indie rock scene, it is a statement from the young artist on what he is capable of, showcase his sound and how he is going to absolutely dominate the field.
