WE REVIEW THE NEW SINGLE FROM OLLY E – THROUGH OBLIVION
Hailing from Leicestershire, alternative rock singer-songwriter Olly E presents his latest single ‘Through Oblivion’ a cut which whilst celebratory and optimistic comes off feeling awkward and cliché.
Opening with a thumping kick and a muted guitar, the track is initially pleasant however the vocal enters with an unpleasant muffled mix and lyrics reminisant of the Disney channel, which quickly become grating.
The track’s redeeming feature is the high-energy chorus which features a powerful guitar and an earworm synth line as Olly shows promising musicianship, which is again shown towards the end of the track with a thrilling solo. In fact, the guitar work throughout is impeccable and further highlights the poor mixing and clumsy vocal delivery.
It’s clear Olly E is an artist still finding his feet and I would love to see him bed out his lyrical themes a little more in the future.
To conclude ‘Through Oblivion’ unveils huge amounts of promise for Olly E as a songwriter and compositionally the track is thrilling at times and well structured. My frustration comes primarily with the lyrics and the delivery, something that will come naturally as Olly grows as an artist, but this release feels half-baked and lacking personality.
