One More Weekend - Aunty Meredith

WE REVIEW THE NEW SINGLE FROM ONE MORE WEEKEND – AUNTY MEREDITH

All the way from Australia, Melbourne-based One More Weekend bring their newest single “Aunty Meredith” to the table as their latest offering – with the four-piece rock band describing it as “that thin line between freedom and losing control” and that it’s “personal, intense and we didn’t want to sugarcoat any of it.”

With that said, the track wastes no time, with a funky guitar twang to kick things off, it soon settles into a upbeat rock and roll backing track.

For a rock track generally, it’s incredibly balanced when it comes to sound, as I find generally rock and heavier genre can have a huge inbalance when it comes to overpowering instruments or spotlight, but this blends together brilliantly, the vocals are still front and centre, but the drumbeat carries it well and there is still room for brilliantly crafted guitar and some fun basslines – whilst it gives that attitude and psyche of rock and roll, it makes it incredibly easy to listen to.

There is a lot of twists and turns, a fair few solos, some of which are a tad too long, but that said it does break up the song nicely in parts too.

The lyrics talk about fighting your inner demons, backing yourself and your thoughts and exploring themes of self-control and a thirst of freedom, using “Aunty Meredith” as potentially a place for guidance or direction out of this thought process or to the freedom they crave, although I couldn’t pick up if it was symbolism or general admiration for a positive figure in their lives, but either way, it works!

The midway of the track does slow down for around 40 seconds, including the vocals, and this is a great hook and brings you back in, not that I was losing interest, there are lots of twists and turns that bring it all together and keep you interested throughout.

It’s quite a hypnotic backing track, and I feel like that’s what One More Weekend were going for, as the artwork is a gorgeous bluey-green with a black swirl going around it, it’s simple, but suits the feel and the messages within the track.

Overall it’s a very easy listen, with durability and it keeps you going, was easy to listen to over and over again and could suit a number of moods, and I would imagine, incredibly fun to perform live too, an excellent track.
