Consistently releasing music since 2021, Paul Askew adds to his ever-growing discography with ‘Asunder’, an atmospheric track that captures the feeling of missing the presence of somebody / something exquisitely.
The opening instrumentation of ‘Asunder’ is filled with mystery, with dark chords and a prominent bassline standing out from the start. A similar vibe to Fontaines D.C. or a perhaps Courteeners, Paul gets straight into the song’s nature with the opening lyrics, describing the pain of seeing a once familiar face and falling over yourself.
Structured just how you’d expect, the ‘northern indie’ roots can be seen throughout ‘Asunder’ but through darker themes, tones and lyrical content, Paul Askew manages to create a sound that can be praised for it’s individuality rather than blasted for it’s formulaicness.
Packed out with a powerful chorus, strong guitar playing and a strong overall sound, there are plenty of positives to take from ‘Asunder’.
Though it’s raw and a little patchy in places, Paul has created a unique sound and combined it with relatable lyricism to give us a product that is not only good, but a sign of greater things to come.
A bit of work to be done going forward but as for ‘Asunder’, I’m very impressed.
