The Work

WE REVIEW THE NEW SINGLE FROM PAUL ROBERT – THE WORK

With over ten thousand monthly listeners on Spotify, Paul Robert appears to be one of the hottest prospects in the LA music scene. Strongly influenced by hip-hop, pop and electronic dance music, Paul’s latest single, ‘The Work’, encompasses what his music is all about.

Coming in at just shy of three minutes, ‘The Work’ kicks off with a serotonin-filled beat and an introduction to the songs themes, with Robert saying “This beat reminds me of being happy, in the sounds of ‘The Work'”. This is a small glimpse into the direction of his songwriting, however it doesn’t take long for ‘The Work’ to encounter some issues. Though the track is well produced and the beat is rather infectious, the vocal performance just doesn’t match the quality. The flow is almost robotic, sounding as if Paul Robert is just reading from a script instead of performing them.

Despite his major following and clear talent as a songwriter, ‘The Work’ doesn’t feel finished to me and it is quite hard to ignore the difference in quality between the beat and the vocals. For someone so new to the industry, there is plenty of time to work on the issues at hand or find a way around them, but for now I can’t claim to have enjoyed this track. It started promising but unfortunately ‘The Work’ lost traction pretty quickly. Plenty of room to improve but positive signs nonetheless.
