WE REVIEW THE NEW SINGLE FROM RATS – SECTION 60

Sharing their first new music since 2022, Liverpool ‘s very own RATS have finally made ‘Section 60’ available to the masses. Debuted at a live show as early as 2021, this track has been a fan favourite for years. It’s political. It’s powerful and most importantly, it’s very good. Infusing ska, funk and hip-hop, RATS know how to write a banger.

In a year where Kneecap have made headlines for their politically charged songwriting, RATS have done this equally as well with ‘Section 60’. A song that recounts the vocalist’s experience with the police, where was stopped and searched simply for being in a specific area. ‘Section 60’ is a form of policing that allows a whole neighbourhood to be prosecuted for the actions of a select few, most notably in the band’s hometown of Liverpool.

RATS - SECTION 60

RATS have converted their frustration with the system into powerful songwriting. The opening riff immediately sets the groove for the song, followed by the introduction of a nasty bassline and some punchy ska chords. The vocals flow perfectly and the chorus is unbelievably catchy.

I can completely understand why fans have been calling for it’s release! Even though the lyrics are full of wit and incorporate humour, they address a serious matter and convey an important message effectively, with vocalist Joe Maddocks stating that the song “Highlights what’s happening nationwide, especially to minority communities.”

Having previously supported Liam Gallagher at his Teenage Cancer Trust show in 2022, the band have used the traction gained exceptionally well to write about matters they find important. With similar musicianship to Jamie T and The Streets, these guys have the potential to make it massive. I would highly recommend checking out their other material and keeping an eye on their future movements.
