The truly mesmeric vocals are what carry this song so effortlessly. A wonderful softness of voice that conveys real emotion in every word makes it nearing-impossible for you to be distracted for even a second as you get lost within them.
It’s a tremendous gift to possess the ability to be able to hook you in so easily with such simplicity, and with his voice, it is almost like they have found a cheat code. The instruments which back him up play their part to a tee as well, but always leave a purposefully spacious foreground for the vocals to expand into.
A distinctive hollow feeling to their sound means there’s a certain melancholic tone that runs through this track but intertwined with that, in true folk spirit, is also an underlying sense of defiance. It is a story of repetition and routine which is ultra-relatable to all of us, but sounds much more poetic here than most of us could put it.
Here in Its Only Rain, they know what they have set out to make and they have mastered it perfectly. This feels like a new high point for them as they move from strength to strength, and I’m sure that’s not a trend that will be stopping any time soon. Another fantastic offering.
