Ruby Francis perches on a cloud when she sings. Breathy but bumpin’ and close enough to feel its warmth, everything about her single “Pages of Philosophy” sits in this pocket of ease. It’s close-mic’d and sports the kind of effortless glide that happens when a singer understands the weight of space as much as sound. Her whisper-close delivery floats over the chords and the end result feels like silk stretched just enough to show the melanin beneath.
She produced this sound piece herself, and it moves like something built with care. Rashaan Brown’s bass tucks itself low, shifting from clipped to full-bodied in fluid as well as subtle patterns. Meanwhile, Ruby’s swirly Wurlitzer hums warmly, while her mini-Moog shimmers like glass catching light. The drums sit tight and springy; snares snap close and fizzy hi-hats help tap out the hip-swaying groove. As the song draws to a close, everything sharpens around our cozy conductor’s voice. Ruby shifts the atmospheric pressure a bit and the beat knocks just a little bit harder.
For a song about love as an open-ended moment, “Pages of Philosophy” avoids feeling burdened by uncertainty or expectations. Ruby enjoys getting caught up in the good vibes and does overthink the feeling. I’d say that this is definitely a single worth sinking into and a nice appetizer from her forthcoming EP.
