RYAN O'CONNELL

WE REVIEW THE NEW SINGLE FROM RYAN O’CONNELL – BLEACH DREAMS

Ryan O’Connell’s Bleach Dreams is the sort of tune that sounds like it rolled out of bed at 2pm, forgot to brush its teeth. It’s a scruffy little bastard of a track, and that’s absolutely a compliment. From the first few seconds, it’s clear you’re not in for some radio-friendly, over-compressed indie fluff — this is lo-fi therapy with a smirk and a six-string.

The guitars? Messy as hell. Purposefully so. There’s a lived-in fuzz to them, there’s a ukulele fluttering around in the background like a pissed-up butterfly. It shouldn’t work, but somehow it does. It’s awkward, offbeat, and a bit wrong… which makes it feel completely right. Like he’s built this song with whatever was lying closest to the couch, and instead of cleaning it up, he just hit record.

But behind the absurdity, there’s a sense of someone trying to make sense of something, even if the something’s been lost down the back of the sofa. It’s almost anti-anthemic – like a song for the hungover and hopeful. Or maybe the hopeless. Either way, it lands.

The vocal delivery is half-mutter, half-confession. He’s not reaching for big notes or grand gestures — he’s talking directly at you, like you’ve just sat next to him at a bus stop and accidentally asked how his day’s been. There’s no façade. No attempt to sound cool. Which, obviously, makes it sound cooler than half the shit that’s trying too hard right now.

Bleach Dreams sets its mood early and kind of sits in it. There’s a charm to that slacker stillness, but you can’t help but wonder what might happen if it took one sharp left turn halfway through — a jolt, a breakdown, a scream, something to shake the dust. Right now, it risks feeling like it’s loitering in one corner of your brain, twiddling its thumbs instead of kicking a door in.

Still, there’s something weirdly magnetic about the whole thing. It doesn’t demand attention, but it earns it by being its odd, unwashed self. O’Connell might not be chasing chart placements or playlist clout, but he’s carving out his own strange little space in the indie messscape.
