If you keep up with the upcoming indie music scene (and you really should) then Sam Scherdel should be a familiar name. The Sheffield singer-songwriter has been a relentless worker post-lockdown with a mountain of singles and gigs under his belt. Sam was recently spotted playing multiple sets at Glastonbury, right now he’s back with his new single, Too Shy.
Too Shy begins with vocal layers relaying the chorus lines before bursting into an engaging indie rock piece. Sam’s new single is a highly engaging track with bouncing bass and drums, excessive percussion and jaunty synth notes. It’s a bright and uplifting piece despite the lyrical themes discussing awkward behaviour, nervousness and chaos. However, the burst of ripping guitars over the 2010’s indie rhythms is its delicious chaos.
The synth notes add a pop flare to the overall track with a sound that was huge in indie’s domination in the 2000s. The fast drums with cowbell and percussion pieces provide an exciting world element to the track. The bass is a thick rhythm in the verse before descending up the frets to a bopping pre-chorus. The fast-paced nature of the chorus is perfect for summer/festival crowds. It pulls to listener towards it, trying to keep up with the diverse instrumentation and speed it traverses.
Sam’s vocals are raspy and raw with compliments the juxtaposition of the light and uplifting music. Think Kelly Jones but with actual variety. The deeper vocals merge with the bass rhythms and play off against the tapping synth like they’re having a dance-off.
The drums are a mighty display of speed and versatility. The steady pounding snares of the verse into cheerful hi-hats is a nice balance of heavy and soft. They shine in the chorus building up the erratic tempo before being allowed to let loose in Too Shy’s outro. Sam isn’t going to settle on simple beats to allow guitars and vocals to flourish. He wants a cocktail of creativity.
With his variety of sounds and styles, Sam Scherdel continues to prove his talent as a writer. His continuing craft is admirable and his dedication to his work is inspiring. With a bulking setlist of ideas, tracks and each single being quite different from the previous, Sam is en route with the makings of one of indie rock’s next big names.
