We review the new single from SILVI – Burning

After the rain, soloist SILVI brings the flames with a brand-new release for the summer – fiery track ‘Burning’.

Born out of lockdown in 2020, this is actually the fifth single for the West Lothian artist (aka Jodi Findlay), and the second release from her in 2022.

With even a quick listen to previous tracks such as last year’s beautifully sentimental and piano-laced ‘Wish You’d Stay’ or February’s rap-infused dance single ‘RAIN’ – it’s evident SILVI has no qualms in experimenting with different genres. But what seems to remain constant is the striking vocal delivery and candid songwriting – with ‘Burning’ being no exception.

Just short of three and a half minutes, it’s as dramatic as previous efforts. This time taking on a moody alt-rock flavour with lashings of edgy electric guitar riffs that cut through the darkness unapologetically. The addition of light strings and thundering percussion on this slow-building and smoldering ballad give it an atmospheric quality sure to send a shiver up your spine.

SILVI’s vocals dance and twirl across the brooding bassline with a soulful ease, displaying a range akin to artists like Christina Aguilera, Billie Eilish and P!nk. But while there’s definite skill there, there’s also a playfulness too. Whether you’re a fan of ‘vocal gymnastics’ or not, there’s no denying the impressive talent of this artist who details a seemingly toxic relationship filled with manipulation and gaslighting to boot. “You left my heart in the back seat of that car”

It’s a thrilling release from SILVI, who despite having only played her debut gig earlier this year, has since performed across the UK gaining attention from BBC Introducing amongst others. Here we enter a new era for the artist playing with the fire of exciting new music – and I don’t mind getting burnt.
