‘Every Cloud Has A Silver Lining’ sings David Stanley on his new collaborative single with DJ SONiC FIGURES. It’s an optimistic title, but there’s plenty of backstory.
Stanley was the once frontman of an indie rock band called Circus Paradise. Since departing, he took an 18-year hiatus from music altogether, citing mental health as a significant contributor to the almost two-decade pause.
Returning in 2021, he teamed up with DJ Andreas Polydoros, known by trade as SONiC FIGURES. The duo’s latest single shows that despite the 18-year break, Stanley can still write a mean hook. The collaboration itself is the marrying of England (Stanley is from Greater Manchester) and America (Polydoros is from New York), but it’s a marrying of styles too, the colliding of dance and rock music.
But the result is familiar. The jagged synths would fit in on a Gary Numan album and synthpop clearly is an influence. However, it’s the jangle pop guitars and rudimental percussion patterns that remind me of Manchester’s Haçienda. This would be a gift to remix. One can imagine a prolonged version of this blasting out of the speakers while clubbers battle fatigue into the early hours.
It’s a reverb-laden track. Guitar lines melt away beneath Stanley’s vocals, themselves smeared in reverb.
Rather like the single’s artwork – which depicts a blurred carousel in motion – the song is hazy. Like the colours in the image blending together, instruments and vocals mould into one another with danceable and catchy fluidity.
