SPIES, contacted us about their their latest single, When Lightning Strikes, a three-minute shot of noise we had to take a look at. It’s loud, unapologetically bold, and dripping with energy, does it live up to its ambitious billing as a rock anthem? Almost.
There’s no denying the frontwoman has pipes for days. Her voice soars over the tightly packed wall of sound, carrying just the right mix of raw power and emotional resonance. She’s got that intangible quality that commands attention, and when she belts out the track’s infectious chorus, it’s hard not to imagine an arena full of fans singing along. Maggie owns it.
SPIES’ signature blend of rock, pop, and a dash of fun makes for a sound that feels fresh but comfortably familiar. The guitar work is razor-sharp, the percussion hits like a train, and the driving bassline holds it all together with precision. There’s an undeniable chemistry among the band members that shines through. It’s clear these guys know their way around their instruments, and the production captures that energy beautifully.
However, where When Lightning Strikes stumbles is in its predictability. The structure is textbook rock anthem—verse, chorus, repeat, with a guitar solo dropped in for good measure. It’s not that there’s anything wrong with sticking to the formula, but in a genre as saturated as this, you’ve got to bring something extra to truly stand out. SPIES certainly have the chops, but the songwriting could benefit from taking a few risks. Inject a bit of unpredictability into the mix?
When Lightning Strikes is a solid effort from a band with bags of potential. It’s fun, it’s loud, and it’s got just enough charm to earn its place on your rock playlist. But if SPIES want to break through to the next level, they’ll need to embrace a bit more daring in their songwriting. For now, though, they’ve got the energy and charisma to keep us hooked. If this is just the beginning of their new chapter, consider me intrigued.
