WE REVIEW THE NEW SINGLE FROM SPOOK MUZIEK – OUR LOVE IS A RIOT! (FEAT: JMS)

Finally, a riot I can get behind! Singer-songwriter Spook Muziek is here with their brand new single, Our Love Is A Riot. The track features Julie Marie Smith and is part of an exciting new EP: SPOOK MUZIEK VS. JMS.

Formerly of Cats For Peru, Spook Muziek was born wearing sunglasses; it is a rarity to see him without them on. His collaborative efforts with JMS on this upcoming EP have proven successful with the two singers’ energy bouncing off of one another.

The mixture of male and female vocals is reminiscent of a classic dance track with both parties going head to head. Their love is a riot and the two of them are rioting back at each other. It feels as though we’re a marriage counsellor and the two of them are letting everything about their relationship come out; the positives and the negatives.

Our Love Is A Riot kicks off with sample layers and a steady track beat. The distorted wubbing synths kick in alongside the vocals with a track that very much resembles that of artists like International Teachers of Pop and Confidence Man. The overall mood of the track as it transcends from verse to chorus is a steady climb with a gentle climax.

There’s a lot of 80s pop influence here with a grooving bass in the second verse. The vocals however are raw and natural and despite the piece being of the dance indie genre, it keeps its vocals clean and unaffected. The second chorus is uplifting before descending into a gritter lyrical delivery as if the subject matter is becoming chaotic. The build-up of additional synths and effects complement this.

The subject of love acts as a consequence with references to the assassination of rapper Biggy Smalls and 1984 references. However, the term ‘riot’ can be positive, like saying someone is a riot, they’re a crazy character but we love them. The closing minute of the track is what everything has been building up to with chaotic synths and slowed beats. The vocal effects come in and we’re finally at an awkward climax that perfectly fits the uncontrolled nature of love.

The repeated line “It’s easier to make love than find love” is the perfect definition of both the song itself and society as a whole. It highlights a throwaway nature and almost lacks real commitment. That throwaway habit is like the crashing down of the sound and how you instantly want to press play and repeat the whole process.

If you’ve been looking for the next step in indie and dance music, look no further than Spook Muziek and their love which is a riot and a track that slaps.
