Oxford outfit Suspire strip things back in this wonderfully gentle new track, September Age Me More.
An acoustic piece, it rests simply on a very basic guitar rhythm to back it instrumentally throughout the vast majority of the track. With all focus therefore heaped onto the vocals they really have to hold their own, and they do it fantastically. Even when some light drums do enter the fray late in the day, they are very much a soft backing addition and still allow those vocals to shine through so brilliantly.
We have heard Suspire take the route of minimalist composition in the past, but to go even further with it here still feels like somewhat of a departure from the norm. Even when incorporating few elements in the past, they have spiced their sound up with some psychedelic overtones. Here there is none of that. This is very much a baring of themselves to the listener, having the bravery not over produce their sound in the slightest, and it has paid off.
September Age Me More is definitely a bold piece. We’re still very much in an era of guitar music where the go to is big heavy riffs and post-punk vocals. Very few bands are looking to strip back their sound to the bare minimum, but Suspire seem to keep pushing themselves to do the opposite of this. Which each release their sound seems to become a little more raw and honest, and when they’re producing tracks like this, you can see why.
This feels like another defining release for Suspire. They continue to develop their sound and are yet to make a misstep in doing so. They undeniably feel like a band who have massive potential to go forward and do some really big and exciting things in the future, and they’re already starting to realise that now. We look on with great anticipation for what comes next.
