THE AMAZONS - NIGHT AFTER NIGHT

WE REVIEW THE NEW SINGLE FROM THE AMAZONS – NIGHT AFTER NIGHT

On their latest single, The Amazons open with the force of a wrecking ball, no hesitation in sight. “Night After Night” lights the fuse with a siren-line guitar, then lets it hang for a few bars like it’s waiting for a reason to explode. The choir chants behind it, low and thick, and the track’s locked into its pulse–every part moving like instinct.

Matt Thomson delivers the whole thing from the gut. There’s steel in his voice, but it doesn’t shimmer–it presses down, slow and deliberate, like he’s pacing through the kind of regrets that pop up without a hint of warning. “Give me all that I need / Find the truth on my knees”. He’s throwing it all in, full exposure. “Keep the fever on ‘til I come undone” turns the heat into prayer.

The drums crash in loud and wild, and the bass slides in under it like it’s sneaking something past security. One minute everything is pulled back with the overdriven guitar lines pulsing like alarm lights, the next minute everything’s in flames. The hard-charging, cutthroat feel never fully fades away and the song knows better than to overstay its welcome.

“Night After Night” is from the band’s upcoming 21st Century Fiction album (out May 9th) and pins everything to routine: want, shame, late nights that all blur into the same kind of ache. It keeps moving forward with the wheel locked tight, overheating engine growling and waiting to be set loose on the world.
