WE REVIEW THE NEW SINGLE FROM THE ASSIST – DISCONNECTIONS

Birmingham-based band The Assist is back with “Disconnections”. The track is a piercing critique of modern detachment, wrapped in their signature “Council-Pop” sound. Lead singer Mikey’s lyrics dive straight into the existential boredom of a hyper-connected yet isolated world. The song is for anyone struggling with the pressures of digital conformity and the fleeting dopamine hits of instant gratification. The chorus feels as much like a personal lament as a rallying cry for collective introspection.

The song’s instrumental architecture mirrors its themes of tension and release. The energy of Louis Davies’s guitar riffs propels the track forward, while Ryan Stanton’s rhythmic drive underpins the urgency of the message. However, the song’s real magic lies in its quieter moments. The real highlight is when the instrumentation cools down in the bridge, allowing the spotlight to fall solely on Mikey’s vocals. This pause feels like a breath of clarity in a chaotic world, giving the lyrics even more weight.

Producer Ryan Malcs’ touch introduces an ambient vibe that elevates “Disconnections” beyond its indie roots. The repetition of the final line, “You know I’m fighting so hard to help with these disconnections from life itself“, is haunting, though it feels slightly too long in my opinion. Nevertheless, the track’s closing notes are a playful nod that contrasts with the song’s heavier themes.

At its core, “Disconnections” isn’t just about the despair of today’s society, it is about the fight to reconnect, to value what truly matters. With this new release, the members stand as chroniclers of their generation’s struggles and aspirations.
