The Broken Creels

WE REVIEW THE NEW SINGLE FROM THE BROKEN CREELS

Aberdonian alt-rock / alt-Americana band, The Broken Creels newest single ‘Killing on the rail line’ is certainly different and nothing like I’ve come across before.

It’s a follow-up to their first single ‘Friend or Foe’ which follows a theme to the notorious crimes of Ángel Maturino Reséndiz, also known as ‘The Railroad Killer.’

For true crime and rock fans out there, it’s the perfect remedy.

Reséndiz was a Mexican serial killer and drifter who gained notoriety in the 1990s, he was convicted of 23 murders committed along railroad tracks in the United States and Mexico.

If you want to know the gory details of the crimes, I suggest you look it up on Wiki, if you’re squeamish, don’t do that and listen to the track, it breaks it down for you in a softer manner.

It starts with a simple guitar riff that gets more intense.

Deep vocals then hit and the drum beat compliments the vocals and the song gets progressively heavier.

Listen to the lyrics, as it is a fantastic way to tell the story.

Colin Clyne, the Creels’ lead singer, says:

“We had the music ready, and it was crying out for a gruesome story to go hand in hand with it. I’d heard about the unsolved 1983 murder of Aberdeen taxi driver George Murdoch, who was killed by the railway line not too far from where I lived growing up, and that inspired the line ‘call the papers, there’s been a killing on the rail line’.

However, I felt George’s killing was a little too close to home for comfort, so I decided to look further afield, which is when I read about The Railroad Killer and his gruesome killing.

As I wrote the lyrics they bled perfectly into the music.”

The artwork doesn’t give too much away but the eerie sunset and landscape of train tracks do the job and match the title well.

Overall it’s a heavy and interesting experience, one I’m intrigued by, I’m interested to see if it follows a pattern of incorporating other true crime with music, an untapped market that could appeal to the masses.
