THE DAZED MINDED

WE REVIEW THE NEW SINGLE FROM THE DAZED MINDED – GOING HOME

Female fronted Reading Quartet The Dazed Minded are back with their newest single Going Home and this latest effort shows a new dynamism to their sound whilst blending with their typical elements that define who they are.

The beginning of the track takes you by surprise with its opening drum riff going straight into a wall of sound of groovy guitar riffs and distorted bass lines that command the introduction to this more classic garage rock song.

It is so refreshing to hear an indie band being fronted by a female guitarist in this age when all male bands tend to be the dominating presence in this genre. Front woman Beth kicks in with sassy vocals as she questions the actions of a character who crosses the boundary between music and football culture. Her vocals remain true to the indie sleaze style that is synonymous with their previous releases. Her smooth vocals in the verses overarch the thumping drums and warped bass lines to create that dirtier sound before the vocals succumb and adapt to those heavier melodies in the choruses.

The chorus absolutely hooks you into the song with those heavy driving melodies and backing vocals interlaying with lead vocals to reach a new level.

What becomes more prominent in the second verse is the use of the cowbell which is a classic staple of garage rock and further shows The Dazed Minded’s well defined grasp of this genre. The lyrics cleverly tell the story from the contrast of the song’s character getting themselves a pint in the first verse to chucking their pint in the second  and kicking up a fuss but with the constant theme of despair. The lower pitches in the verses match the character’s emotions of hurt, rage and disappointment.

The bridge before the final chorus comprises the song’s heftiest elements with heavier drum riffs that could potentially cross the border between garage and a punkier style of play. With these drums and deeper chords, this builds the tension before launching into the final chorus as once again, the question is raised about how our character is feeling and are they dreaming of going home which it might be time for if the character is drinking and watching on as the rest of the football team arrive.

The Dazed Minded’s newest offering is a successful transition into a heavier, more raw garage rock sound whilst remembering their roots and it would be amazing to see them continue down this road and explore other styles which are already present whether intentional or not.
