UK-based-Nigerian-rooted artist Eghoza shuts the door on a lost love with the single “Homicide” – a slow-bled gut-check of a track that carries every inch of its heavy heart on its sleeve. He builds tension over a flickering nylon guitar melody, its glow fading like a porch light on its last breath. Producer/arranger Beach Boyy makes sure that his notes are plucked carefully and that a few bluesy slides ease into focus every so often- adding an organic warmth that lets the moody beauty breathe.
Eghoza steps in slow, singing in a low and hollowed-out tone across the first verse, riding over the plucked guitar strings and harp notes like he’s sidestepping another rabbit hole of bad memories. There’s no rush to fill the air of that first verse with heavy drums and bass lines. Instead, we listen in as he sits with the ache settling in around his words.
When the chorus hits, the ground shifts. Drums fall in heavy as he repeats “Cause I hear rumors/ Rumors of you.” Big, subby kicks drag along the floor in long, deep strides as hi-hats flicker tight across the ceiling. Dry snapping rimshots chip small fractures into the wall of sound, each hit shaking loose a little more of the weight. Everything widens, but nothing brightens – which is just the way it should be. The sound doesn’t offer relief—it doubles down and moves in the way that hurt moves: slow, weighted, and waiting.
