London’s iC1’s have let me have a sneak peak into their latest album offering “What took you so long?” in the form of the single “Wack Jack”.
The iC1’s open with a quick burst of infectious guitar twangs but it’s shortly overshadowed by these deep, powerful vocals, which are both fast and slow in tempo, but it does elevate the track with each note, and then all of a sudden, this burst of energy comes out of nowhere.
I’m talking kids in the 90’s on blue smarties energy – but it’s infectious, Daniel Coburn blends his voice brilliantly into the backing track and the guitar solo particularly is something special, neither are outdoing each other, yet still having their own time to shine.
It’s a rollercoaster in the sense of energy, the highs and the lows, but the key lyric ” I’m going a little bit Wack Jack, a little bit mental!” it suits the mood of the song perfectly – there is the perfect balance of moody, upbeat and chaotic, but in a brilliant way.
This was something I could easily listen to doing daily jobs or even just chilling in the garden, it’s got the perfect feel to match plenty of playlists and soundtracks, even though the lyrics at times describe a few tough times and feelings – but that is disguised by the energy of the track, could be subliminal messaging but I could also be overthinking that – either way it works.
The guitar solos on this track are ridiculously impressive, it’s slick, it’s fast-paced and it’s fun and you don’t even pick up on it – you just nod your head in appreciation and have a great time.
I think it could be taken to a whole new level live – especially with the right stage presence and crowd.
The black and white artwork works perfectly, with some what I assume to be teens having a kick-a-bout, a little nod to growing up maybe? it’s simple, but it works.
It’s a brilliantly crafted track, with a few simple but powerful elements, with the potential to be a 2025 indie anthem, consider me impressed and intrigued to hear more…
