The Kowloon’s press release calls their new single ‘I Don’t Care’ a Britpop banger. Those of us old enough to have suffered Britpop first hand will no doubt point out it was very rarely as good as this offering from The Kowloons.
The band say it’s “…..a song about kindred spirits, an unbreakable bond that transcends all else”. It’s a simple, almost naive formula of chiming guitars, mid atlantic vocals with just the right amount of scouse drawl, melodic bass and backbeat that’s been done to death and will no doubt continue to be so, but yet when it’s done like this, done so absolutely perfectly like this, it sounds so fresh, so full of vitallity that you can’t help but want more.
Thankfully, the Kowloons can knock out these feel-good classics for fun. Track after track that have you singing along to the chorus on first listening….. pure scouse guitar pop at its finest. If you’re not familiar with The Kowloons then please, please, please give everything they’ve done a listen. The band’s back catalogue serves as a guitar pop masterclass, not bad for a band who, realistically, are only just getting going!
The band, originally formed by twins Anthony and Stephen Ng in 2022 before being joined by Mason Jones on guitar and Bobby Griffiths on bass, have been tipped by This Feeling as ‘being big in 2025’ and whilst that may be a little too soon, The Kowloons are cetrtainly on the way to be being something very special indeed.
The band aren’t just great on record. Live they deliver the goods, doing so in a relaxed, unpretentious manner so familiar but yet quite distinctive in today’s grassroots scene. Check out the band’s socials for details of where you can catch them this summer, you’ll be glad you did.
