After a triumphant 2023 spent stamping their wildly experimental soundwaves into the carpet of the UK scene, The Last Clouds have dived synth-first into the new year with their latest doom pop anthem.
Home is a self-described “nostalgic montage of memories” shrouded in polarising techno narratives and unshifting arrangements to immortalise the duo’s shared recollections. It starts with a burgeoning synth line accentuated by mechanical flourishes that subtly morph into the verse where a driving beat takes hold. Vocalist Matt Schott characterises the track with his reminiscent incantations while the electronic drums clank beneath like industrial machinery.
The chorus offers an enlightening lift as the synths swirl in a smoother sustained fashion. The track’s hook “I’m coming home” soars above its ever-evolving instrumentals that erupt the track into a massive pinnacle. A testament to The Last Clouds’s song craft, this is how a chorus should feel: inspired.
Halfway through, the intensity pulls back into a lonesome synth, but it isn’t long before those sense-bending flourishes return and the huge chorus comes around once again, hammering the message home.
If Home is the duo’s scrapbook in song, it represents an intriguing string of events that will be locked in the tune forever. Their musical interpretation of nostalgia is inherently unique and leaves little to be desired; a refreshing take on a theme done so many times over. The Last Clouds have killed this one, inciting an excitement for what will come next.
