Spoiler alert, ‘The Late Freddie Price’ could just be your next favourite band!
We’re about two months into a promise from the curiously named ‘The Late Freddie Price’ They will continue to release singles every two weeks, and from February will start releasing tracks from their forthcoming EP, Colours of Love and Hope.. This, the fourth so far, is the first to hit my radar.
The Mancunian two-piece have been described as ‘Mancunian Americana’ and ‘The Smiths meet The Beatles’. When you read ‘The Smiths meet The Beatles’ as a music writer you’re duty bound to go on the offensive but try as I might, all I can do is fall in love with the sound of this band (not sure it’s a band)
‘…Into Your Arms’ is simply a beautiful piece of mellow, laid-back to the point of can only just be arsed, old-school pop music. I’m not so sure about The Smiths being there but The Beatles yes. Along with The Byrds, The Velvet Underground, Bread, Big Star, early Fanclub, Sonic Flower Groove era Primal Scream etc… take any great harmonious, melodic guitar band, from any genre or any time and you will find elements here.
It’s pure heart-on-your-sleeve pop music, under driven guitars, delicately phased drums, hushed vocals barely hanging onto both the key and the melody and it’s all wondrously beautiful.
There is quite some back story here regarding Freddie Price and Kane G Turner which needs to be explored, but that’s for a later date. For now, let’s just sit back and wallow in the splendour of ‘…Into Your Arms’ and the accompanying three tracks this duo has blessed the world with so far.
