‘Long Shadows’ is the third single from The Lathums’ upcoming album ‘Matter Does Not Define’. Veering away from their usual anthemic songwriting, ‘Long Shadows’ is an evocative track that explores the complexities of love and it’s ability to both “heal and hurt”, in the words of frontman Alex Moore.
The song’s introduction is rather harrowing, with a suspenseful guitar riff and some eerie vocals that feel like they are from the theme song of a Netflix drama. Followed by the drums and main vocals, gut wrenching lyrics such as; “I want to die, I don’t want to fight, leave me behind” solidify the song’s vibe. The next three minutes are a gradual climb towards the classic Lathums outro we’ve come to expect, with Moore ramping up the emotion and delivering a breath taking vocal performance.
We’ve heard incredible things from the Wigan rockers before but this, for me, tops anything they’ve previously released. The lyrics are powerful. The guitar work fits the song perfectly. It’s everything we love about the Lathums but it feels more matured. Accompanied by an equally as harrowing music video, ‘Long Shadows’ is The Lathums at their very best. Embarking on a UK & Ireland album tour in spring 2025, I would highly recommend catching them if possible, because they are without a doubt one of the UK’s best live acts.
