The NSA are a gem within Scotland’s Mod scene. Their popularity peaked in 2014 with their first album, TV & Sunshine, gaining fans who would wait in anticipation for the next drop. However, it wasn’t until 2020 that the band returned with a live album. Since then, they have released two singles well received by their loyal supporters. It’s been quite the journey.
Which brings us to today, where, once again, the Dundee trio are emerging from their hole. This time with a special unreleased single.
Long Brown Hair may not be unfamiliar to some NSA fans, as it featured on their live album. It was written by frontman Nick Shane and recorded way back in 2014. Shane claims it’s “one of his best tunes.”
The peppy anthem begins in classic NSA style, with an acoustic guitar progression backed by a tuneful bassline and chirpy, fast-paced drums. It’s not long before the verse kicks in. Shane’s thick and hearty vocals take the spotlight as his staccato rhythms bring a punchiness to each phrase. His energy is electric and matches that of the accompaniment, but the lyrics get lost in the mix, making them hard to understand.
Just when you think it’s not possible, the chorus erupts with even more drive, reinforced by an organ searing in the background. This verse/pre-chorus/chorus structure continues throughout the rest of the song until the final minute when we hear a guitar solo.
The solo section starts strong with a nice, lightly overdriven tone, but it kind of loses its vigour halfway through. I’m sure in a live setting, when there’s more improvisation involved, this part sounds a lot better.
Overall, this is a great tune from the NSA. It’s got a true feel-good vibe resonating throughout that just goes to show the trio haven’t lost their way since the early days.
