This year has been musically fruitful for Welsh singer-songwriter Tom Collins. With three new singles added to his roster, he’s gearing up to see the year out with a fourth and final release.
The track is a tearjerker and a half. Titled Care in the World, we hear Collins sing of a broken childhood with little prospects. His lyrics are unapologetically raw, particularly the hook that arises early on in the track: “No school/no food/no open arms for you/so where is the care in the world right now?”
Accompanying the words is an earnest, fingerstyle guitar line that rises and falls throughout the track. It’s the perfect complement to Collins’ voice, which oozes with the pain of lived experience. If the lyrics aren’t portraying what Collins has been through himself, then he’s certainly a skilled actor.
Later on, in the bridge section, a gorgeously folky violin solo joins the accompaniment. Its tone is crisp but full and void of any painfully high frequencies. Strings always elevate a song’s emotional pull, and the violin is well-fitting here.
It goes without saying that Care in the World is not a jolly track to be ending the year on. However, I feel that it may be healing on a personal level for Collins, and credit to him for displaying such vulnerability.
