Ugly Club are poised to capture the attention of all alt-music lovers with their upcoming mixtape, Wendy’s Waiting Room. They’re fresh off the back of a performance at Download Festival 2024, while also working hard to make a unique mixtape experience. This eclectic 10-track journey is set for release on 4th October 2024, along with shows in Manchester the same month.
Fronted by powerhouse vocalist Imogen Storey, they promise to deliver something for everyone. From acoustic ballads to heavy rock anthems, as seen in the likes of their new single ‘Eyes Wide Blind’, an absolute earworm of a single. Ugly Club’s music is all connected by a unique thematic thread, solidifying them as a true genre-bending band. From this new single I can also see their creative expression in their music video, as well as their energy when performing. The atmosphere of their performances seems electric, combined with their killer tracks. Storey’s voice is well suited to smashing out these heavier tracks. Although, it’s impossible to ignore the gritty bass lines and huge guitar riffs.
However, we’ll have to wait until October to experience this. But, fortunately, they’re doing events in the iconic Afflecks Palace before release. Ugly Club have plans to have pop-up shops themed like quirky, dusty doctor’s offices. For sales of the mixtape, exclusive merchandise, and interactive performances. You can expect to receive unique promotional items such as “prescriptions” with gig info. Not only that, but hospital wristbands pre-loaded with songs, and personalised hospital ID-style lanyards for early ticket buyers.
Having faced a significant setback when their billionaire landlords evicted them to convert their recording studio. Ugly Club faced the challenge by creating ‘Wendy’s Waiting Room’. A raw, honest delve into the human experience, and I loved the metaphor of different body parts to express this. Especially with tracks ‘Cut Your Teeth’ and ‘Pain In My Chest’. Each song has its own story and style. But all are unified under the watchful eye of Wendy. A character created by Storey to symbolise her string of unlucky experiences with various doctors, nurses, therapists, and dieticians over the last 10 years.
