Urban Echos kick things off with their debut single “WHY” and there’s no easing into it. The song starts hard and straight away grabbed my attention. For a split second, I genuinely wondered if this was about to turn into some kind of operatic moment before it snaps straight into gritty indie rock mode.
The sound is very British and you can absolutely hear that Manchester edge. Jangly guitars, a restless pace and that familiar indie-rock tension that feels wired and slightly chaotic in a good way. It doesn’t overthink things, it just goes for it and that’s probably why it’s so easy to get pulled in.

Scotty Dunning’s voice sits front and centre, carrying lyrics that feel frustrated and raw. Lines like “It looks like I’ve done something wrong / One second fine, the other not” feel relatable in that uncomfortable, stuck-in-your-own-head kind of way. The chorus is the real standout for me. The way he stretches the word “why” made it addictive instantly and it was already looping in my head before the end of the song.
My only real complaint is that it ends too soon. Just as it really settles in, it is over and I was expecting another verse to come in. Still, for a debut, “WHY” makes a strong first impression. Urban Echos sound confident, impatient and ready to make some noise, which is exactly what you want from a first release.
