VANNGO

WE REVIEW THE NEW SINGLE FROM VANNGO – REARVIEW FLAMES

Vanngo’s new single Rearview Flames  is now out. This isn’t the overproduced Nashville pop-country sheen that clogs up playlists; it’s raw, stripped-back, and more concerned with atmosphere than chasing radio gloss. Built on acoustic guitar.

There’s a warmth here that feels genuine – you can hear the strings buzz, even the spaces where the track breathes. That unpolished quality works in its favour,. Vanngo clearly understands that the best folk and alt-country tunes are about more than just chords – they’re about storytelling. Rearview Flames nails that with lyrics leaning into escape and renewal, and that’s not easy to pull off.

That said, a couple of things hold it back. The track runs on a slow-burn energy, which works for atmosphere, but at times it risks meandering. A touch more dynamic lift – whether that’s a percussive layer creeping in or the vocal pushing harder towards the end – would have given the song a stronger payoff. And while the imagery is strong, some of the rhyming edges into cheesy territory. It’s the kind of thing that jars against the otherwise gritty, rootsy feel, pulling you out of the moment just when the track is building its mood.

All said, Rearview Flames is a solid entry into the alt-country canon, the sort of track that will sit comfortably next to artists like Ryan Bingham or Jason Isbell. It’s not flashy, and it doesn’t need to be – the whole point is the journey, not the destination.
