VELVET STARLINGS – BULLFIGHT

WE REVIEW THE NEW SINGLE FROM VELVET STARLINGS – BULLFIGHT

Striking you like a lightning bolt from the get-go with its unrelentingly energetic opening, Bullfight is undeniably an adrenaline fuelled rock marvel. The piercing guitar riffs set a hair-raising tempo as they seem to race the ever-quickening vocals, dropping down occasionally only to return with ever more venom.

An exploration of the concept of the ‘adrenaline junkie’, it’s perhaps quite apt that this is a track that seems to itself hook into your mind and compel you to listen again and again. It’s not just a full-throttle burst of sound that gives it its charm though, and their sound, whilst perhaps appearing erratic, is impressively tight.

In stark contrast to the electrifying pace which is set through most of the track, it also takes quite unique turns in parts of the track, dropping into strange, sludgy, almost acidic sections which lull you in even more.

The whole thing seems to be a showcase of the range of sounds they can create and works wonderfully in getting us excited for the new upcoming album for which this is the lead track.

Strangely for a band hailing from The City Of Angels, it has a certain Britishness to it, whether intentionally or not, stemming from its high energy, almost Britpop-esque style of guitar music. The drop into the more experimental sounds through some verses though does transport it back to the Sunset Strip and balances their whole sound wonderfully.

If there is a track to really get the anticipation going for August 9th when they drop Pacific Standard Time, this is it. If they maintain this level through that album, it’s one to really look forward to.
