WILDSMITHS - MEXICANA

WE REVIEW THE NEW SINGLE FROM WILDSMITHS – MEXICANA

A trio of songwriters based in Taunton, Somerset, Wildsmiths are serial releasers of music and taken from their latest album is ‘Mexicana’, an anthemic number that reels you in from the first note.

Comprised of three musicians who are equally invested in songwriting, the expectations lay heavy for their music to stand tall above the rest, and upon first impression, they have promise.

Gritty guitar-playing paired with vibrant drumming creates an atmosphere for a stadium straight off the bat, whilst a simple, yet effective, bassline mellows everything out in aid of introducing Rob Liddell’s vocals.

Letting the funk build throughout the opening verse, the inspirations of all three writers can be seen within ‘Mexicana’, bending genres before the chorus bursts back into the anthemic sound earlier displayed in the intro. Tight instrumentation and really catchy sound, Wildsmiths show what they’re all about with this track.

As the chorus fizzles out and the song progresses, the vibe stays emphatic and gives ‘Mexicana’ a boost towards the finish line, however it leaves you wanting more from the chorus. The vocals just feel a little flat compared to other sections. By no means poor, just a little short of something they are very capable of producing.

The final minute absolutely blows the rest of the song out of the water, ramping up the intensity all whilst keeping the structure intact, making the middle section all the more disappointing. Not from a quality standpoint, but knowing an extra bit of oomph in the first chorus would elevate this track even higher.

A few tweaks short of something spectacular, Wildsmiths showed real glimpses of their talent with ‘Mexicana’. A really enjoyable listen, comparable in places to Manic Street Preachers / Stereophonics and a showcase of the musical / writing talent of all three members. What’s not to like?
